"Free" Expression in Temple Architecture
The Chunichi Shimbun newspaper featured a prominent article on the Jogonin International Art Festival, currently being held at Jogonin Temple. The article carefully described how 41 artists from six countries, including Japan, are exhibiting contemporary art pieces based on the theme of "freedom," set at Jogonin Temple, a historic temple in Omihachiman. The article noted that a distinctive feature of the festival is how it makes use of the temple's diverse architectural spaces to display a wide range of expressions, including video, sculpture, and installations, blending seamlessly into the tranquil atmosphere of the temple complex.
Each artist has created works that capture the light, shadow, and atmosphere of the temple, bringing out the charm of the place, and the photographs in the article convey their unique worldview. The dialogue between the historic architectural space and contemporary art creates an "art space that can only be experienced here," and this is being highlighted as a major attraction of this art festival.
